“One of the first signs of the beginning of understanding is the wish to die. This life appears unbearable, another unattainable. One is no longer ashamed of wanting to die; one asks to be moved from the old cell, which one hates, to a new one, which one will only in time come to hate. In this there is also a residue of belief that during the move the master will chance to come along the corridor, look at the prisoner and say: ‘This [person] is not to be locked up again, [they are] to come with me.'” -Franz Kafka
Right brain planning is to allow your journal to be your planner; to promote expression over productivity and achievement.
My right brain planning practice continually enables me to:
- Process whatever I am experiencing (feeling, thinking), fostering self-compassionate and being present (mindful, involved and connected) within my living.
- Express myself without filters and shoulds [to get “it” out (verbally/visually)] as well as “decipher” and determine the root causes (and inspirations) of what I am experiencing.
It took most of the past decade to understand the value of my right brain planning practice. I began to identify specific details of my practice that serve to calm and guide me.
- Music is certainly a part of this practice; I am currently in a cycle of listening and exploring only instrumental playlists.
- After discovering Max Richter’s The Blue Notebooks, an album that includes narrated texts from Franz Kafka’s Blue Octavo Notebooks, I started reading excerpts from Franz Kafka’s journals.
- I have been listening to a lot of Alexis Ffrench music (and his music is how I found the Max Richter compilation).
Braveheart, I share quotations here as a point of inspiration, but also as notations regarding my own journey.
Finding (and having) language to express and understand ourselves provides comfort and courage along with the benefit of a new lens, creating new perspectives.
- It is a way of remembering that “everyone carries a room about inside them” (Franz Kafka); and within those details of our-selves (inside and outside our windows and walls) we experience meaning and purpose. ♥

There is no substitute for observation + trial and error experimenting with what works for you as a right brain planner.
- This site, and the concept of right brain planning, is not about how-to’s — merely ideas and prompts provided for your interpretation, Braveheart.
