art-making as ongoingness

Take heart. Breathe deep. There is so much more to come. You have known unimaginable heartbreak, and worry, and you have also known the morning sun: a beautiful reminder of the peace and the new beginnings that are still available to you.

This is the time of each calendar year I compile my ideas for resources (community support and content) to support a right brain planning practice.

I know the world is bruised and bleeding, and though it is important not to ignore its pain, it is also critical to refuse to succumb to its malevolence. Like failure, chaos contains information that can lead to knowledge — even wisdom. Like art.

Toni Morrison

As I have done many times before — this remains my practice in spite of the chaos in the world — because I believe art is an essential part of life; it consoles and heals.

  • Having morning rituals (such as right brain planning & Feeltober prompts) is like having a portal to step 🕳️✨ through — and ensures I don’t become 🫣😵‍💫 distracted by the chaos of the world.

For me, this past week has been about rest, slowness and memoir writing (along with sorting through my ideas 💡 for 2024).

  • 🔎 Braveheart, my right brain planning practice is a promise to ❤️ myself to honor a daily ritual for creative processing (instead of performance/perfection/worry).
  • ☮️✒️ To be open to teeny-tiny baby-steps along the fine line between overwhelm and resilience.
  • 🌈 To acknowledge that [love] 💟 and [holding 💢 space] is my priority. 💜
  • 🔎 To seek contentment and fullness as a reframe of “planning” and “goals” — and to be wholeheartedly 💓 present in my life (as it is today, right now).
  • 💞 To be in the fullness of community (in spite of 🥺 its vulnerabilities) because together 👩🏽‍🤝‍👩🏻💕 we are stronger.

I’ve discovered five distinct functions for self-preservation within art-making: ritual, documentation, conversation, expressing, and disruption. Depending on my need, these modes of creation offer me comfort, clarity, and direction; it’s where I lay my burdens down.
