52 Weeks of Noting {collage and creative record} 5/52

My freelance business is about the number of days I am energized by what I do + providing income for living.

Being clear about what we’re doing and why is the first step in doing it better. If you’re not happy about the honest answer to this question, make substantial changes until you are. ~Seth Godin

There is a lot here this week … This week’s card is the most meaningful of the cards I have created thus far, and its details needed to be documented and :!: look for the details a special bonus  gift at the end of this post.

This week was intense. It was a time of decision; it was a time of sorting through piles {literal/figurative} of Before in order to make room for Next … And there was grief to process. Choices I {had to} make in order to accomplish the life I wanted; choices to start “piles” of the elements {literal/figurative} that would have to wait. Those situations and choices were time sensitive — tagged with deadlines and expiration dates.

The talent I was lacking may have been perseverance, the willingness to do something badly over and over again until I began to learn how to do it well, began to find my way of making what was on the campus reflect what was in my head and heart. ~Oriah Mountain Dreamer

Underneath anger is pain, your pain. It is natural to feel deserted and abandoned, but we live in a society that fears anger. Anger is strength and it can be an anchor, giving temporary structure to the nothingness of loss. ~Grief.com [link]

There was a new voice which you slowly recognize as your own, that kept you company as you strode deeper and deeper into the world … ~Mary Oliver

“What nobody tells people who are beginners — and I really wish someone had told this to me … is that all of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, and it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not.

But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase. They quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know it’s normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story.

It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.”

26 do not fear mistakes

{do.be who you say you are} #livefree

Despite my freelance work beginning when I was age 17, each new endeavor feels like the first time — including all the what-if’s and retching. Reading the words of those who have traveled through the valley of a dream’s death and onward — is like a medicine.

Discovering syllables that describe what I am feeling and daring to accomplish — even if a mere moment at time — is both centering and affirming.

I read more excerpts from Anne Lamott’s, Bird by Bird

and Oriah Mountain Dreamer’s, What We Ache For.

26 What We Ache For

I read through the quotes I have collected in my art journals … I read Mary Oliver poetry; I read Emerson:

And this deep power in which we exist, and whose beatitude is all accessible to us, is not only self-sufficing and perfect in every hour, but the act of seeing and the thing seen, the seer and the spectacle, the subject and the object, are one. … Every man’s words, who speaks from that life, must sound vain to those who do not dwell in the same thought on their own part. I dare not speak for it. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson, The Over-Soul

26 connecting

Morning views have been a necessity for the value nature’s tranquility, solitude and exercise {MS weakness and pain have steadily increased their presence}. In the stillness, there has been much inspiration! I abided in the company of kindreds with more intention this week {listening.sharing}. We often become so focused on the moving-through we “forget” about sharing our storieswhat we survived and learned along the way.

I will not die an unlived life. I will not live in fear of falling or catching fire. I choose to inhabit my days, to allow my living to open me, to make me less afraid, more accessible, to loosen my heart until it becomes a wing, a torch, a promise. I choose to risk my significance; to live that which comes to me as seed goes to the next as blossom and that which comes to me as blossom goes on as fruit.

I have been working out details to re-launch the Tumblr I set up for Right Brain Planner; and posting links pertaining business and productivity to Right Brain Planner Facebook page; the following excerpts from this post are typed/attached to Week 5/52 card:

Finding flow … happens when a person’s skills are fully involved in overcoming a challenge that is just about manageable, so it acts as a magnet for learning new skills and increasing challenges. If challenges are too low, one gets back to flow by increasing them. If challenges are too great, one can return to the flow state by learning new skills. … Almost any activity can produce flow provided the relevant elements are present, so it is possible to improve the quality of life by making sure that the conditions of flow are a constant part of everyday life.

What I must do is all that concerns me, not what people think. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

I shared time and inspiration with a dear kindred yesterday. She is someone who sees me, who is a witness for what I must do. Her words {testify} to me … Because at each new beginning, there is an intense moment of choice and recommitting — going deeper within to set centering posts for the storms of change and challenge that will come.

Never fall for the lie that what you dream of doing isn’t worth it because “it’s already been done.” Remember that you are unique and the way you do what you do may just change the world. ~Jules {who faithfully reminds me to do it my way}

Which brings me to this mile marker … Announcing that prep work is completed, and I will open my Etsy shop on Tuesday 1/29!!

It is opening without a “perfect” plan and knowing everything I need to know. I will know as I go … and as I know better — I will do better! ;)

The first print offered for sale is {Process of Becoming} … A multi-media abstract hand — coffee-stained and created during the month of January as I journaled through the #iaccept prompts {unconventional re-solutions} from TheArtJournaler.com.
